What Is Botox/Dysport/Xeomin?

As our bodies change, we want to do whatever we can to retain the youthful look and texture of our skin. This can happen in many ways, but one of the most effective and popular treatments is Botox, a specialty procedure at the Gold Coast Dermatology Center.

Botulinum Toxin type A was first explored for medical uses in the 1950’s. Botulinum toxin received its first FDA approval as Botox in 1989 for medical purposes, and in 2002 it received FDA approval as Botox Cosmetic for cosmetic treatments of facial lines and wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is a safe, effective, and proven method for treating fine lines and wrinkles. Today Botox is a household name because injection of botulinum toxin type A is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. In 2015, over 6.7 million botulinum toxin type A procedures were performed. There are currently three botulinum toxin type A formulations that are FDA approved for cosmetic use. They are Botox Cosmetic (manufactured by Allergan), Dysport (manufactured by Medicis) and Xeomin (manufactured by Merz Aesthetics). Dr. Manolakos and Dr. Schroeder are board certified dermatologists at Gold Coast Dermatology Center who have the knowledge and expertise to ensure your Botox injection gets you the results you want.

Generally, results for botox injections are seen in 3-5 days, although it may take a full two weeks to see the results. Typically, patients will see the effects of the Botox/Dysport/Xeomin for 3-4 months before additional treatment is needed.

During And After Botox Treatment

During the treatment, which is generally a fast procedure only lasting a couple of minutes, several tiny amounts of Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin are nearly painlessly injected directly into the muscle. No anesthesia is required, however, we want you to be comfortable and if you are concerned, we may apply a topical anesthetic or cold packs to reduce any discomfort. Immediately after your treatment, most patients look the same. Results of the treatment start being seen in 3-5 days after the treatment. Some patients may have little red dots for a few hours after the Botox injection. Bruising is uncommon, however, it may occur and usually resolves within a week. Makeup can be applied to cover-up any bruising. Avoid lying down or bending over for 4 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, yoga, applying pressure or massaging the treatment area for 24 hours. You can apply a cold compress to the treatment area if needed for bruising or swelling.

Possible Side Effects From Botox Treatments

Side effects of Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin include possible discomfort, bleeding and bruising at the site of injection. In a very small percentage of cases, there can be drooping eyelid or ptosis, which resolves with time and sometimes with treatment. Non-underarm sweating, infection, sore throat, flu, headache, fever, neck or back pain, itching, and anxiety has been reported. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at an increased risk of serious side effects and therefore should not be treated with Botulinum toxin. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not have Botulinum toxin.
